In fact, I left it parked outside Sunday afternoon because I figured the neighbors would appreciate this beautiful
piece of sculpture sitting in my driveway.

In the mid-20th Century shared unreality that was «Caroland» it was somehow viable, with intentions that were quite probably on the right side
of honest, to make a
sculpture — in this case, Stainless
Piece C, 1974/5 — that
sat flat on the floor and rose up no more than a couple
of inches, so you looked down upon it like a relief laid horizontally (I made a few like this myself); and to make it out
of a few scattered (or were they artfully composed?)
One
of the most powerful
sculptures in the exhibition is a small textile work by Louise Bourgeois: a sickly salmon - pink hand sewn crudely, its gnarled fingers outstretched,
sits on a worm - eaten
piece of wood.
He began the
sculpture during a residency at a Shaker community in Maine, where a resident building a chair explained to Ward that he constructs each
piece of furniture for an angel to
sit on.
This
piece sits on the ground without a pedestal, directly in the space
of the viewer, and is unframed and exposed in a way that almost no previous
sculpture had been.
No single
piece demands sole attention;
sculptures sit patiently in the centre
of the room whilst neon signs blend quietly into the walls.
Sitting on a
piece of canvas, the sand creates a landscaped terrain that lies somewhere between painting and
sculpture.
The area devoted to structures will have several works, including WHAT IS SET UPON THE TABLE
SITS UPON THE TABLE, a
sculpture of a wood table supporting a
piece of trimmed limestone by Lawrence Weiner, combined with a partially carved foundation stone from the Jerusalem wall, on loan from the Jewish Museum..
Slated to be installed within a traffic island at the eastern end
of Thorndale Avenue, where the City meets the Lake, Ashland will allow people to
sit, recline, relax, and unwind, taking in the magnificent view
of the water and sky upon a
piece of sculpture that was created by collaboration between artist and invasive beetle.
A particularly strong
piece, The Lifted X (1965),
sits in the center
of the main gallery and meets visitors as the first
sculpture they experience in the space.
Through video, enlarged
sculptures, a create your own diploma station, and a reimagining
of the standard resume format, the artist attempts to play, antagonize and reflect on what it means to enter the labor force.Highlights
of this exhibition will be Please Congratulate Me, an enlarged
sculpture of a graduation tassel that will be hung from the building and Intern as Art, a performative
piece in the form
of a hired an intern who is paid to gallery
sit, search for more permanent employment online, and enthusiastically talk to gallery about works in the show and his or herself.
We also have six
pieces by conceptual artist Maurizio Cattelan, including this untitled
sculpture of a donkey
sitting on its haunches like a dog.
As Harwood describes it, «the
sculpture can be seen as a quirky little art
piece, appreciated for its artistic and architectural design, or experienced as a shady oasis where people
sit and ponder the Potomac River, and are inspired by the movement
of water.»
