of interpretation as performance not with the historian's craft but with the supposition that a text (any text, although it is with
scripture that I am most concerned)-- a set
of black marks
on white paper — tells you how to take it, without any interpretative labor
on the reader's part, a labor for which the reader must take personal responsibility.

it COMMUNICATES ideas... to read the
SCRIPTURES in context does NOT limit itself to the Bible ALONE... one needs to study JEWISH CULTURES... the Bible does not contain every
piece of informaiton
on the Jewish culture (The Jews already knew their own culture) nor does any ONE Book... get the background, the culture..
It is finally a relief to know that reading one more book, contemplating one more pithy saying, meditating
on one more
piece of scripture, doing one more good deed — none
of these is going to make the difference.
I would prefer to worship Gandalf the Gray or Aslan than embrace a theology based
on «We have decided not to live by the full council
of scripture, just
pieces of it, & our human reasoning has dictated what is applicable to us».
JB... from what I gather, you are not a believer because you don't undertsand
scripture except to pick and choose a
piece of scripture and base it
on what fits your need.
