It is not difficult to imagine a catechism for children teaching them the biblical narrative and helping them construct a sense of the whole that goes beyond the bits and
pieces of scripture which they typically are taught.
Not exact matches
There are two
pieces of evidence later in
Scripture which reveal to us that this is the way the tenth plague should be understood.
It also makes sense to hold every
piece of Scripture to the whole
of Scripture, and interpret every single passage according to the Spirit
of the passage's context, the book in
which it is found, and
of the entire Bible.
Psalm 10: 3 - 4 — This talks about the wicked men, how they do nt have God in their hearts or in their minds,
which is a fine
piece of scripture but it can hardly be used for either myself or the maker
of the video since we both seem to advocate a deep and personal relationship with the Lord rather than letting a group
of «religious» people ruin it for you.
If you look back where I first (I think) explored the analogy
of performance, in a
piece titled «Performing the
Scriptures» (first published in 1982, reprinted in a collection called Theology on the Way to Emmaus in 1986), you will see that I contrast the notion
of interpretation as performance not with the historian's craft but with the supposition that a text (any text, although it is with
scripture that I am most concerned)-- a set
of black marks on white paper — tells you how to take it, without any interpretative labor on the reader's part, a labor for
which the reader must take personal responsibility.
We would end up with a fractured canon, with bits and
pieces taken out
of their Scriptural context, with a different body
of canon for each theological point
of view, and with those portions
of Scripture which we find uncomfortable not only ignored but disposed
of altogether.
It feels entirely
of a
piece with what we see
of Abundant Life, every detail
of which — the enormous red - carpeted sanctuary, the state -
of - the - art media equipment, the hip modern cafeteria with its artfully
Scripture - adorned walls — feels ruthlessly accurate and almost comically alienating.
