WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) announced today that it is issuing $ 2,488,497 in grants to state entities, local communities, and non-profit organizations to address pipeline safety challenges related to damage prevention and to promote more involvement in local
pipeline safety initiatives and awareness efforts.
ALLENTOWN, Pa. — U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today launched a national
pipeline safety initiative to repair and replace aging pipelines to prevent potentially catastrophic incidents.

We have had several inquiries about whether these state
initiatives will have an impact upon the Department of Transportation's longstanding regulation about the use of marijuana by
safety ‐ sensitive transportation employees — pilots, school bus drivers, truck drivers, train engineers, subway operators, aircraft maintenance personnel, transit fire ‐ armed security personnel, ship captains, and
pipeline emergency response personnel, among others.
Established in 2013, the CAAP
initiative has provided more than $ 3.9 million in research awards, and has exposed 133 students to
pipeline safety as part of 26 sponsored projects.
The FY 2013 budget also proposes a series of Pipeline
Safety initiatives that will strengthen oversight of our Nation's
pipelines.
