in my JO post, I do tend to overlook some of Oliver's shtick — and questionable tactics — when I consider how much valuable attention he's drawn to critically important issues like childhood obesity and diabetes, our nation's over-processed diet and the abysmal state of
school food in many
places in the U.S. I'm just not sure he would have achieved the same high ratings with a measured, PBS - style documentary on the topic.
The severity to which the person over or underreacts to the sensory information affects the level of difficulty the person will have functioning
in daily life situations, like going to
school, trying new
foods or going to crowded
places.
More pragmatically, though, one of my core interests as a writer and advocate is
school food reform, and I personally believe GMO has no
place in that conversation at this juncture.
She has a hard time finding a
place to eat her afternoon snack because
food is not allowed
in the classrooms at her
school.
But even putting aside concerns about sugar, San Francisco
school food reformer Dana Woldow (of PEACHSF.org) recently undertook a careful economic analysis of
school bake sales, looking at the cost of ingredients and parent time / labor and questioning whether it's an effective
school fundraiser

place.
While Texas's childhood obesity rate does remain stubbornly high, what would it look like today if the TSNP hadn't been
in place for the last decade to curb the worst junk
food on
school campuses?
Now, though, the Texas Department of Agriculture inexplicably wants to take a huge step backwards
in child nutrition by proposing: a return of deep fat fryers to our
schools; a six-fold increase
in the number of allowed junk
food fundraising days; and the abolition of the «time and
place» competitive
food restrictions that have served our children well for over a decade.
Instead we instituted a groundbreaking
school nutrition policy to remove the worst junk
food on our
school campuses, including a ban on deep fat fryers and the imposition of common sense «time and
place» restrictions on the sale of competitive
foods in the cafeteria during
school meal times.
Thanks Jenna, but this
school board policy was
in place 3 years before I got into the «fix
school food» arena.
Junk
food fundraising
in or near the cafeteria was a problem even when the old TDA «time and
place» rules were
in place, but at least those rules could be used to fine
schools if violations were found
in an audit.
Some
food changes CPS has announced include serving a different fruit and vegetable every day, offering whole grains every day and serving juice only one day a week
in place of fruit — all HealthierUS
Schools Challenge requirements.

Schools alone can not undo the junk
food culture corporate interests have spent years putting
in place.
And of course much of my reporting for the book didn't take
place in schools at all, but
in pediatric clinics, neuroscience labs, living rooms, and fast -
food restaurants.
But, at least at present, the ultimate check is a triennial audit by the state agencies overseeing federal
school meal programs; this audit covers hundreds of items, everything from
food safety to sanitation, and also includes determining whether a district has a wellness policy
in place that's being enforced.
So while there's clearly room for improvement
in Greene, it feels unfair to compare it to a county which
places an unusually high value on exceptional
school food, has a student population better conditioned to accept such
food, and has affluent parents who can pay the higher price tag that comes with it.
Here
in Houston, over 80 % of our students rely on free or reduced price federal
school meals and it was precisely that issue of economic dependency which led to my interest
in school food reform
in the first
place — and to the inception of this blog back
in 2010.
The SNA's assertions regarding increased
food waste have been echoed
in anecdotal reports from
school districts around the country, but
school food advocates are urging Congress to stay the course and keep the new system
in place.

school resources, or lack of effective policies and procedures.1
