Since
different elements and compounds absorb light
at characteristic
wavelengths, astronomers can determine what chemicals make up a
planet's atmosphere by measuring the relative amounts of light that come in
at particular
wavelengths.
They determined the
planet's radius
at 10
different wavelength bands, from 300 - nanometer ultraviolet light to 1000 - nanometer infrared.
The team used the GROND imager
at the 2.2 m ESO / MPG telescope of the European Southern Observatory in Chile to observe the
planet simultaneously
at seven
different wavelength bands spanning the optical and near - infrared.
Prior observations of extrasolar
planets had detected elements by analyzing light passing through their atmospheres, but Richardson says this is the first measurement of the energy coming directly from the
planets at many
different wavelengths.
The number of
planets discovered
at 500 nm (black curve) that could also be detected
at longer
wavelengths (colored curves), as desired for spectroscopic observations, as a function of telescope aperture size and for two
different assumed inner working angles.
The spectrograph produces 18 images
at different wavelengths of light, which enables GPI to reject light from nearby stars, which can be up to 10 million times brighter than the
planets being studied.
The probes will carry a similar array of spectrometers to those on MESSENGER, and will study the
planet at many
different wavelengths, including infrared, ultraviolet, X-ray and gamma ray.
[2] Such
planets are difficult to observe directly and previous studies
at millimeter
wavelengths have failed to achieve a sharp view of their inner,
planet - forming zones where these
different explanations could be put to the test.
I understand the superficial attractiveness behind the proposition that the atmoshpere contains some gases that are largely transparent to incoming solar radiation and therefore the majority of this solar radiation finds its way through the atmosphere to the surface whereupon it heats the surface and this heat is, inter alia, radiated from the surface
at a
different wavelength at which
wavelength the atmosphere (or some gases within the atmosphere) is not transparent such that some of this radiated enerrgy is «trapped» thereby effectively warming the
planet.
