«For decades, conventional wisdom held that large Jupiter - mass
planets take a minimum
of 10 million years to form,» said Christopher Johns - Krull, the lead author
of a new study about the
planet, CI
Tau b, that will be published in the Astrophysical Journal.
«Giant
planet formation in the inner part
of this disk, where CI
Tau b is located, will have a profound impact on the region where smaller terrestrial
planets are also potentially forming.»
Drake wanted to aim it at the same two sunlike stars he had observed 50 years ago,
Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani, each a bit more than 10 light - years from Earth, to see if he could detect radio transmissions from any civilizations that might exist on
planets orbiting either
of the two stars.
On average, the disks studied by Spitzer turn out to be 100 million years old, one hundred times the duration
of planet formation implied by the Cohen - Kuhi
Tau / 4 results.
In the meantime, aspiring female astronauts in search
of a role model had to make do with «Astronaut Barbie» or scantily clad Jane Fonda in the 1968 movie Barbarella, who piloted her fur - lined spacecraft on a mission to eradicate evildoers on the
planet Tau.

of an infant
planet, possibly less than a million years old, taking shape near the star CoKu
Tau 4.
This latter feature is upsetting for those who hope that any
planets around
Tau Ceti support life, because Earth - like
planets and terrestrial life are made
of heavy elements.
For instance, the IAU states that it is not allowed to propose the same name for a host star and a
planet around it, yet one entry for the planetary system
of Tau Boötis suggests calling both the star and its
planet «Alfraganus.»
Mildly encouraging news for Earthlings hoping to escape the scorched ruins
of our own
planet: A team

tau Ceti, a Sun - like star located just 12 light years away.
In this regard, HL
Tau is very different from what the conventional theory
of planet formation suggested.
Using data
of tau Boo b collected with the Near Infrared Echelle Spectrograph (NIRSPEC) instrument at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawai'i, the researchers were able to compare the molecular signature
of water to the light spectrum emitted by the
planet, confirming that the atmosphere did indeed include water vapor.
Looking to resolve this problem, Lockwood and her advisor Geoffrey Blake — Caltech professor
of cosmochemistry, planetary sciences and chemistry — were inspired by the recent detection
of carbon monoxide in the extrasolar
planet,
tau Boo b and they wondered if they could detect water in a similar manner.
However, in the case
of HL
Tau, large
planets have already stared to form even with an immature central star.
In addition to analyzing cooler
planets and dimmer stars, the researchers plan to continue looking for and analyzing the abundance
of other molecules that might be present in the atmosphere
of tau Boo b.
Studies with ALMA and other telescopes have yet to detect any obvious signs
of planet formation in it, though higher resolution observations may reveal structures similar to HL
Tau, which is
of a similar age.

Tau Ceti e and f — potentially residing in the habitable zone.
We have already demonstrated a level
of capability by detecting the known
planet around the star
Tau Bootis.
Although no
planets have been detected orbiting
Tau Ceti as yet, it is likely that any
planet found to orbit within the star's dust disk would experience relatively frequent bombardment from asteroids and comets
of the size that is believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs and other types
of multi-cellular life on Earth.
Planet f initially looks more promising, but modeling the evolution
of the star makes it seem probable that it has only moved into the habitable zone recently as
