naming of features on satellites.
Other astronomers find the detections convincing, although most reserve the
name «planet» for bodies that form within a
planetary system and orbit stars, says theorist Alan Boss of the Carnegie Institution of Washington in Washington, D.C. «They should call them «
planetary - mass brown dwarfs,»» Boss says.
For instance, the IAU states that it is not allowed to propose the same
name for a host star and a planet around it, yet one entry for the
planetary system of Tau Boötis suggests calling both the star and its planet «Alfraganus.»
There are proposals to
name the entire known contents of
planetary systems after Japanese soybeans, or Japanese desserts, or famous Japanese professional wrestlers.
In many of these cases, the star will thus take its
name from various details of the scientific projects that brought attention to it by discovering its
planetary system, which leads to exoplanets with unwieldy monikers like «2MASS J04414489 +2301513 b» or «MOA -2007-BLG-192Lb.»
In honor of the donations of Gloria and Ken Levy that helped facilitate the construction of the Levy spectrograph on APF and supported Lauren Weiss, the team has informally
named the HD 7924
system the «Levy Planetary System.&

Approved by the IAU Working Group for
Planetary System Nomenclature, it includes
names proposed by the New Horizons team and pays tribute to explorers, futurists, and fictional characters.
The
planetary system was
named TRAPPIST - 1 after The Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) in Chile.
