PTB can occur for a variety of reasons, which may be broadly classified as either medically indicated (induction of labour or
planned caesarean section) or spontaneous (spontaneous onset, or premature rupture of membranes).

The low emergency
caesarean section rate and assisted vaginal birth rate in our study were consistent with the low rate of
caesarean section (2.8 %) recorded in the Birthplace in England Study for women who
planned a homebirth, 43 and in a South Australian study (9.2 % for
