The Wistar Institute Scientific Advisory Board is a group of world - renowned scientists with broad scientific expertise who
meet annually to review the Institute's strategic
plan, finance, facilities and
faculty for promotion, and provide the president with advice in these areas.
Since our founding, we've maintained a weekly, two - hour, common
planning block where we can
meet in teams, departments, and as a whole
faculty to discuss the past week of school and make
plans on how to address any issues that have arisen.

As principal, I know how hard it can be to
plan and prepare for a meaningful
faculty meeting.
As teachers, we are often asked to «do» a lot more than necessary: memorize standards,
plan lessons, prepare for various assessments, call homes, provide a warm environment for our students (and visitors), attend
faculty meetings with varying effectiveness and relevance, grade mounds of papers, and take what little time we have left to eat and sleep, usually less than we should.
Here are some conversation starters that can be used in
faculty meetings, grade - level or subject - area
planning or preparation periods, or as a professional development activity:
A discussion of the crisis
plan needs to be part of
faculty meetings at least twice a year.
Those include introducing and reviewing software, Internet resources, and other appropriate materials, and making the information available to staff; coordinating computer usage in projects and activities within, across, and between curricula and schools; working with classroom teachers, individually and in grade level teams, to
plan, organize and implement the use of technology through such activities as demonstration lessons, team teaching, and joint
planning; providing both building - based and district - wide staff development at
faculty meetings, district professional development days, and after - school and summer workshops; and keeping abreast of current technologies by attending conferences and workshops on a regular basis.
Improving teaching methods and fully coordinating our instructional program requires that the full
faculty be brought together on a regular and consistent basis for study and
planning In the past, teachers and administrators have tried to coordinate our program of study and make instructional changes during after school
meetings, and over the summer without the participation of the entire
faculty.
Research behind VAL - ED (the Vanderbilt Assessment of Leadership in Education tool to assess principal performance, developed by researchers at Vanderbilt University) suggests that there are six key steps - or «processes» - that the effective principal takes when carrying out his or her most important leadership responsibilities:
planning, implementing, supporting, advocating, communicating and monitoring.40 The school leader pressing for high academic standards would, for example, map out rigorous targets for improvements in learning (
planning), get the
faculty on board to do what's necessary to
meet those targets (implementing), encourage students and teachers in
meeting the goals (supporting), challenge low expectations and low district funding for students with special needs (advocating), make sure families are aware of the learning goals (communicating), and keep on top of test results (monitoring).41

There are far too many teachers who walk out of
faculty meetings before they are done, refuse to come to school on time or fail to complete lesson
plans and collaborate with other staff members because of contractual limitations.
