By examining
plant leaf wax remnants in sediment core samples taken from beneath the Ross Ice Shelf, the research team found summer temperatures along the Antarctic coast 15 to 20 million years ago were 20 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degrees Celsius) warmer than today, with temperatures reaching as high as 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius).
The findings are based on analyses of ancient
plant leaf wax found in the sediments of the Gulf of Guinea in combination with computer models of the climate system.
These findings are based on the isotopic composition of
plant leaf waxes in marine sediments.

She uses this knowledge of
plants, and specifically their
leaf waxes, to document past changes in
plant life and rainfall patterns, including studies on the expansion of grasslands in Africa and the revegetation of Antarctica during a prior warming event.
By analyzing the
leaf wax from ancient marine sediments, the team determined the region's past rainfall patterns and also gathered clues about what types of
plants were growing.
They measured the amounts of carbon isotopes in
plant -
leaf wax found in the sediments and from that determined what types of
plants had lived in the two areas during the past 27,000 years.
Brown researchers have compiled a detailed Indonesian climate record of the last 60,000 years, tracking telltale indicators in sedimentary cores: titanium levels (a marker for surface water runoff) and the carbon isotopes of
leaf wax, a marker for
plant varieties (grasses indicate dry conditions).
Different
plants have different carbon isotopes in their
leaf wax.
Because
plants alter the chemical composition of the
wax on their
leaves depending on how dry or wet the climate is, the
leaf wax from the sediment core's layers provides a record of past fluctuations in rainfall.
