If the agricultural industry is to be competitive and profitable, we
need plant protection products that protect the plants against fungal and insect attack.
This is true for fertilizers, substrates, products to combat parasites as well
as plant protection products, disinfectants, livestock feeds and silage additives.
When asked specifically about selected topics, Salmonella, genetically modified foods, antimicrobial resistance and residues of
plant protection products head the list where awareness is concerned.
The chemical industry turns over about 40 billion euros a year in
chemical plant protection products worldwide, and a third of these chemicals ends up on the fields in the EU alone.
The initial General Court decision concerned an access to documents request by Greenpeace Nederland and PAN Europe to the Commission regarding the first authorization to place the pesticide, glyphosate, on the market in accordance with Directive 91/414 concerning the placing of
plant protection products on the market (currently Regulation 1107/2009 on the same subject).
Unfavorable regulations on farm - made and organic fertilizers,
plant protection products and farmers seeds,
Anton Fagerström at Malmö University, Sweden, has investigated the interaction between the plant's barrier,
plant protection products and adjuvants that are added to increase the effect of the plant protection product.
In the future, the results of this research could enable selection of the most effective surfactant for a particular
plant protection product, and the most effective plant protection product for a particular plant.
However,
plant protection products have a number of negative effects on the environment.
Therefore, to generate a sustainable agriculture, farmers must optimise their use of
plant protection products.
Furthermore, Anton Fagerström has studied cuticle uptake of
plant protection products and which properties in a mixture that affect uptake.
Anton Fagerström's research has focused on the interaction between the cuticle which is the outermost layer of the plant leaf, and
plant protection products and surfactants, surface - acting agents that are added to increase the effect of the plant protection product.
The EU Commission publishes a draft roadmap, Defining criteria for identifying Endocrine Disruptors in the context of implementation of
the Plant Protection Product Regulation and Biocidal Products Regulation.
It will also have competence over actions concerning infringement and validity of Supplementary Protection Certificates, for pharmaceutical and
plant protection products, based on European bundle patents and unitary patents.
These SPCs extend the protection of patented active ingredients present in pharmaceutical or
plant protection products.
