Today in Breezy Point residents commemorated the one year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy with a public ceremony and a volunteer effort at
planting dune grass on a long sand dune that residents recently created.

But a new study published in the Journal of Applied Ecology and led by University of Pennsylvania doctoral candidate Bianca Charbonneau finds that the invasive
plant does have one advantage over its native counterpart, Ammophila breviligulata, or American beach
grass: the invasive is better at preventing erosion of
dunes during big storms.

dunes behind the eastern beaches are colonised and stabilised by spinifex
grass and other coastal
plants adapted to harsh salt and wind conditions.
By the time I moved back to Massachusetts in the early 1990s after living away from here for over 2 decades, the

grasses and scrub brush to control erosion.
