In an earlier blog
post we talked about the importance of developmental editing and why the focus on big - picture stuff — structure, book - spanning issues like
plot or organization, character development, dialogue, and that sort of thing — needs to come first, before you spend too much time worrying about the finer
points of style and wording.
In this
post I am referring to developmental editing or structural editing, which looks at the overall work to identify problems with characterization,
plot, tone,
point of view, pacing, transitions, the organization of material and so on.
As Jefferson
pointed out
in his
post, when it comes to illogical
plots or story worlds, we can also use alpha readers, those willing to help us brainstorm the development of our story.
Case
in point, a UK based publication named the Telegraph claimed that an intelligence agency named SITE mistook the Fallout 3 concept art above of a
post nuclear Washington D.C. as being apart of an al Qaeda terrorist
plot.
As I
pointed out
in the
post up top, the HL
plots for the Lower 48 and Russia, using only data through 1970 and 1984 respectively, were basically 100 % correct
in predicting the respective
post-1970 and
post-1984 cumulative production numbers for both regions.
This is a general
point — I am
posting in the comments section of a blog, I am not going to give you
plots, charts and citations, especially about things that are widely available all over the internet, I refer to the conclusion that follow from the data and assume that whoever is reading has either looked at the data, or will do it after he has read the
post.
