A study, published today
in Science Advances, found that when scientists used noninvasive brain stimulation to disrupt a brain region called the temporoparietal junction (TPJ), people appeared less able to see things from the
point of view of their
future selves or of another person, and consequently were less likely to share money with others and more inclined to opt for immediate cash instead of waiting for a larger bounty at a later date.
As to «questionable rigor,» it was the first modern laboratory experiment of the phenomenon, so I naturally
pointed out ways
in which
future studies could be improved — that is a standard part of
science writing.

As Greg Petsko
points out
in his essay on the
future of crystallography (see page 42), most experimental
science is an attempt to overcome the limitations of the human eye.

While some jobs, will require an advanced degree, a 2014 study funded by the National
Science Foundation

Journalists dealing with global warming and similar issues would do well to focus on the
points of deep consensus, generate stories containing voices that illuminate instead of confuse, convey the complex without putting readers (or editors) to sleep, and cast
science in its role as a signpost
pointing toward possible
futures, not as a font of crystalline answers.
Universities OTOH would worry about damage to their reputation
in the
future if they were to endorse currently favored dogmas that had weak
points that might
in time prove fatal, or that competing
science courts might consider to be disconfirming.
in three subjects — computation, mathematics and physics (and I mean this literally — it is listed twice
in this page devoted primarily to computational physics grand challenges, Navier - Stokes is one of the grand challenges
in mathematics with a substantial prize, and both classical and quantum chaos, self - organizing phenomena and complexity
in general are grand challenges
in physics (all present
in the single problem of understanding the climate well enough to compute meaningful predictions of
future climate)-- it seems both unlikely that this
science will be «settled» soon, nor is it at all unreasonable that it is not settled at this
point in time.

* Here Anthony Watts acknowledges the fact that AGW has nothing to do with faith, but is true and tried
science that should be the guideline for
future, as physics and engineering both
point to the fact that once a system that tries to reach an equilibrium according to QM (approximated by Newtonian mechanics) is disturbed enough it will change towards a new equilibrium state with potentially catastrophic and chaotic alterations
in the system, which will present problems for the subsystems functioning within this system,
in the AGW case this could be the human cultural system, though Watts doesn't mention it
in the lead.
I would however
point out that an instance of North Dakota flooding or freezing is not «global» nor is it indicative of a trend — it is regional and is a single event, and let's please not be myopic here and muddle the issues, as it's even worse «
science» to take a single isolated event
in time and geography and then attempt to extrapolate it out across the entire globe and into
future decades than to depict an out - of - context «hockey stick» of historic data as is being
pointed out here.

assuming what you say about skeptics changing topic as you describe is accurate, and at this
point I do we are talking about data that is less than 200 years old, out of which extraordinary claims are made as to how that data relates to distant past and
future trends tough sell assuming that all adjustments to the data are scientifically sound, It is very difficult for me to believe that measurements that have gone through so many iterations can be trusted to.0 and.00
in most other
sciences, I doubt they would tough sell (the photo of the thermometer is downright funny)
