I think it hits the nail on the head with some of the questions so many women ask about
the point of natural birth.

natural for primitive Jewish Christians to use the enigmatic saying
of Micah 5:2 as a prediction.
During my
natural birth classes they were pretty much attachment parenting advocates (within limits) but they showed balance by saying that sometimes after you have done everything to calm and comfort a crying baby to no avail, if it you gets to the
point where you are frustrated to the
point of snapping and possibly harming the child, it is better to put him or her down step back and possibly call for help (grandparents, trusted friends) if available.
At this
point, I had given
birth to a healthy baby boy following Molly's stillbirth, and I was able to find better organic or
natural alternatives to use in place
of the conventional brands we had been using... except when it came to laundry detergent.
Soon after those thoughts popped in my head, our doula arrived (Josh called her at some
point to let her know we were going to the hospital) and was helping me with positions while we waited to be called back, and my thoughts
of giving up on a
natural birth went away.
You skewed my words regarding «managing» my
birth... the whole
point of the midwife is to alert the mother
of the possibility
of a problem, just like an OB so then a proper course
of action can be taken... I was merely saying that they don't think
of birth as a medical emergency from the beginning, requiring things that are unnecessary, like constant monitoring because it's easier than intermittent monitoring, or restricting maternal intake because the doctor could get puked on, or have fecal matter excreted during delivery is selfish (and yes, I know, the mother could aspirate, but the rate
of that is low too... and I'm not saying they need to eat a steak dinner... but denying a drink
of water, or a popsicle during a long labor is just ridiculous, as is rushing a
natural process for convenience sake.)
I have
pointed out before (in my «Medicalization» blog mentioned in the first line
of this) that no matter how strong or
natural -
birth educated you are, sometimes you just feel pressured to go along with it.
c - section at some
point, yet is all for
natural birthing, I can say that the encouragement
of having a more
natural birth is being pushed by c - section women, not the doctors.
I have to admit that I felt pretty proud
of myself for already implementing many
of the simple and amazing ideas for
natural family living experiments, and although I would love to try almost everything on this list, when I thought
of what was actually a pressing matter for me, I realized that nothing is probably more important to me at this
point than preparing to have a
natural birth in May.
If you're planning a
natural birth without drugs, expect the intensity
of your contractions to increase at this
point.
Could it be that perhaps she was
pointing out that original sin taints ALL childbirth (all aspects
of our lives in general), and that sin is not more connected to c - section than it is to
natural birth?
