My
point here
about self -
editing is that by taking your time and fixing as many errors as you can with the help of readers, you can get a price on the lower end of your editor's rates and maybe even skip developmental
editing altogether.
In an earlier blog post we talked
about the importance of developmental
editing and why the focus on big - picture stuff — structure, book - spanning issues like plot or organization, character development, dialogue, and that sort of thing — needs to come first, before you spend too much time worrying
about the finer
points of style and wording.
Recently I wrote a blog post
about what I heard at the San Francisco Writers Conference and one of the
points I mentioned in the post is how important it is to have your manuscript
edited.
Lines in the sand, my friends, because a content editor will also line
edit, and a line editor will occasionally let you know
about a continuation error, and a developmental editor... well, you get the
point.

However, our
points below (
edited where appropriate),
about platforms being the digital arbiters for good taste, stand.
Some of the people who are avidly complaining
about grammar, spelling, and writing style, and who are
pointing out
editing issues, are themselves editors.
Google also demonstrated video
editing on an Android - powered, Motorola Xoom, which got carefully name - checked half - a-dozen times during the presentation — the
point being that Android tablets are
about creating content, not consuming it, like some other tablets that didn't get mentioned.
Jordan makes a good
point about the cost of
editing.
