After March 31, 2017, Southwest no longer allows you to
get a Southwest
Companion Pass with Marriott
points if they are transferred after this date.
Because of the recent 100,000 Marriott offer, I've received a lot of questions about transferring Marriott
points out to Southwest in order to
get the
Companion Pass.
For 270,000 Marriott
points, you could
get 120,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards
points (good for the
Companion Pass), and 7 nights at a category 1 - 5 Marriott property.
This requires earning 110K
points in a calendar year, so by signing up for two Southwest credit cards and earnings the sign - up bonuses, you would already have earned the
companion pass, entitling you to unlimited buy one,
get one free
pass for the year.
These
points count towards Southwest
Companion Pass, so if you are targeted and are able to
get past 5/25, this could be a good opportunity.

The hardest way to

Companion Pass is flying 100 flights, but the easiest option is transferring hotel
points into your Southwest Rapid Rewards account, which you can do until March 31, 2017.
For 270,000 Marriott Rewards
points (90,000 SPG) you can
get seven nights in a category 1 - 5 hotel and 120,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards
points, which alone will qualify you for the
Companion Pass, and you can use those
points for Southwest flights.
Once you complete this redemption by calling Marriott and the
points hit your Southwest account, you'll
get Companion Pass status.
If you've
got the Southwest
Companion Pass (which I highly recommend), then that means you've
got two round trip tickets to Cancun for merely 9,000
points!
The only other way to
get coveted
companion pass status on Southwest is to amass 110,000 Rapid Rewards
points.
What's nice about this offer is that the 50K bonus
points get you almost half way toward Southwest's coveted
Companion Pass status, which requires 110,000
points.
Normally you would have to earn 110,000 Southwest
points in order to earn the
Companion Pass but, as I've said, if you're a resident of California you can now
get one by applying for (and
getting) one of the three Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cards I've mentioned above.
The 60,000
point sign - up bonus is nice, especially if it helps
get you the
Companion Pass.
Here's what you'll

The Southwest
points would go to his account so my parents could
get the
Companion Pass since they live outside of Philadelphia and my sister and I both live in Florida so this would allow them to visit us more often, which is a win - win all around.
While you can still
get the Marriott package and pick up some extra Southwest Rapid Rewards
points, you'll no longer make progress toward the
Companion Pass by doing so.
If you earn 110,000
points in one calendar year (your credit card
points count toward that total as do the
points gained from any Southwest flights you take), you

getting the
Companion Pass and / or if the math works for you then buying Choice
Points in this sale could be a good idea.
With this
pass, you
get a free
companion pass even if you book the first ticket with
points.
Our Southwest
points and
companion pass got us there for near nothing and we only spent 3 - 4k SPG
points per night.
The fact you can use the
Companion Pass on award tickets essentially doubles their value, and you can currently
get 50,000 Rapid Rewards
points just by applying for a Rapid Rewards Premier card from Chase and completing $ 2,000 in minimum spend.
But, if you hold the Southwest
Companion Pass then you're
getting double the value out of your
points.
However, when it comes to the
Companion Pass, it can
get a little confusing as to how to earn it and what
points count for what.
It was great because it allowed you to top off
points to earn the
Companion Pass or come up with Rapid Rewards when you couldn't
get another Chase Southwest card.
And the same rule applies about timing your sign - up for the Rapid Rewards Shopping Portal, if possible, I'd wait until there's a special offer for joining and try to
get an extra 500 - 1,000
points that could go toward the
Companion Pass.
