A combination
of top
teachers, improved curriculum, policy changes, and an increase in family and community engagement and
political support is what helped to turn D.C. schools around.

of political naivete, the Gates Foundation actually gave money to the

teacher resources and

of political will on the part

In short, there are signs that
support for online learning is reaching a

From a quite different place on the
political spectrum, the New York affiliate
of the National Education Association has withdrawn its
support for the Common Core as implemented in that state, and the American Federation
of Teachers is calling for a moratorium on all consequences attached to student test results while the standards are being implemented, a policy that has been affirmed in California.
The choice
of the Democrat - turned - Republican — a former
teachers» union lobbyist and Reagan administration official — drew immediate praise from
political conservatives who
support her position on two pressing education - related issues: affirmative action and bilingual education, both
of which Ms. Chavez opposes.
The effect is mediated by numerous factors:
teachers» knowledge, beliefs, and existing practices; the economic, social, philosophical, and
political conditions
of the school or district; the stakes attached to the policy; and the quality
of the
support and lines
of communication provided to
teachers and administrators.
Mulgrew also blasted the governor for being behind «corporate bonus - style merit pay,» claimed that his «education agenda isn't about education at all — it is

support of charter schools is a «gimmie,» a
political move that costs you nothing... (R) apidly expanding charters offer many poor and minority children their best chance
of emerging from K - 12 schools ready for a job or further education.
As
teacher union watchdog Mike Antonucci points out, the unions will claim that fee - payers (those who opt out
of paying the
political portion
of their union dues) «are not
supporting unions»
political speech in any meaningful way.»
But through the
support of the NEA's Public Engagement Project, the Columbus Education Association convened a community conversation attended by more than 300 people — parents, business leaders,
teachers, district administrators, and local faith - based and
political leaders.
In Tennessee, one
of StudentsFirst's goals is to provide a
political firewall
of support for legislators who have continued to back a controversial 2010 law that tied
teachers» and administrators» evaluations to gains in student achievement, despite vehement criticism from some quarters.

Let's hope that Governor McCrory sees the obvious educational and
political benefits
of focusing most
of his efforts on

teachers and students in the traditional public school system that educates more than 90 %
of North Carolina's children and readies the future workforce
of the state.
Teachers need not endorse any particular viewpoint or policy proposal in the current debate over the availability
of firearms to help students explore the power
of young people to galvanize public opinion and
political support behind issues they care about.

support unification with Chicago
Teachers Union that will strengthen our voice and

Many sectors — governors and mayors
of different
political parties, state legislatures, businesses, and educators and their unions — are calling for meaningful reforms in the way we evaluate and
support our
teachers.
They want
teachers to be able to opt out
of supporting political activities without losing their union membership, voting rights and benefits.
Ultimately, a successful case would create a new class
of teacher: union members who aren't coerced into
supporting their leadership's
political activities.
In addition, the American Federation
of Teachers Federal
Political Action Committee threw in $ 600,000 to the Democratic Governor's Association's $ 5.7 million Independent Expenditure campaign to
support Malloy's re-election.
Rather than requiring that any candidate seeking
political support from
teachers have a solid progressive record on public education and articulate clear - cut policies and positions that are diametrically opposed to the corporate education reform industry, there is a growing acceptance
of candidates who have thrown their
support behind the charter school industry and the broader education reform agenda.
We are required, as a condition
of employment, to financially
support teachers unions and their
political agendas.
At this point, Arne Duncan was a
political liability for Hillary to gain the
support of teachers.
The presence
of this topic at a presidential debate only further solidified Friedrich's argument that these are
political issues that
teachers should have a right to
support or not
support.
The unprecedented anti-Common Core test uprising by New York parents has the full
support of NYSUT (New York State's
teachers union) and more than 120 local New York
teacher union chapters, as well as the New York Working Families Party and a variety
of groups on both the left and the right
of the
political spectrum.
