Local
elections are often said to be about local issues but actually most of the changes over
time in shares of council seats won the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats can be accounted for by changes the
popularity of these parties
at the national level.
At a
time of extreme «personalisation» of politics, the personal
popularity of a leader is not a sufficient factor to win
elections, but it appears to be a necessary one.
At the risk of sounding cynical, everything about this — including the perfect timing — suggests to me that it's being staged: 1) Labour is on course for a huge defeat 2) no - one wants to take on the leadership of the doomed party at the 11th hour 3) GB's popularity (such as it is) is at an all - time low Given that no - one else wants the job on the eve of such a crushing defeat, surely the only chance Labour have of gaining support and mounting any semblance of an election campaign is to first restore some faith in their battered leade
