The painting in question is, like all
of Anderson's recent movies, a large - scale
portrait of an individual who, in his
particular failures, losses, commitments and dislikes, embodies something fundamental about the time and
place in which he lives.
Additionally, the exhibition presents three earlier series
of portraits that investigate the inner lives
of particular animals: Reverie (2005) depicts gray wolves, alone and in packs, in forested nature preserves in Sweden, Norway, and the United States; Palermo 7 (2006) contains close - up
portraits of racehorses, with their heads tethered in
place in their hippodrome stalls in Italy and France; and Heart Shaped Hole (2008) depicts stray dogs, adapting in different ways to the privation they experience on the streets
of Palermo.
The new collection exhibition
places particular focus on
portrait - related imagery, as seen in work by Philip - Lorca diCorcia, Nan Goldin, Rineke Dijkstra, Roe Ethridge, and Lorna Simpson, as well as new acquisitions
of work by Catherine Opie, Anne Collier, and Ray Navarro with Zoe Leonard.
Burkhard's work is not about

particular place, but about the natural or civilizing phenomenon itself.
