The fact of the matter is that salary comparisons will always be apples - to - oranges due to the many variables
at play —
so we as business leaders must define roles, devise compensation ranges for those roles, and then decide where the
company will
position itself within those ranges based on the variables.

so many different stocks
at once in such small amounts but as I mentioned I had quite a few free trades set to expire and this was reason enough for me to initiate small

Full disclosure: no
positions in any
companies mentioned here, and as they used to say
at TheStreet, I am writing about a microcap stock,
so they would typically not allow articles on it without a big warning, if
at all.
Unfortunately, the current economy has not been kind to college students —
companies are offering fewer
positions and there are more applicants,
so competition is rough and one needs to be
at the front of the crowd to do well (based on my experience).
Took a look
at one of the best possible
companies to invest in, which just
so happens to my largest
position.
Then there is Steel Partners (SPLP), a holding
company trading
at a discount to NAV, where many of the listed
companies it holds
positions in are, themselves, trading
at a discount to intrinsic value;
so two levels of discounts.
This all just illustrates that cashflow & a
company's cash / debt
position always come first, and is far more important than its intrinsic value — a classic value investor might disagree, but long before that intrinsic value is reached, a poor cash / debt
position & negative cashflow will ensure a) the
company goes bust first, or b) it finally gets snapped up — sure,
at a nice premium, but that premium will be on an atrocious share price,
so nobody actually makes a profit...
Of course, that sets it up for a good 2015 were investors to have a change of heart, but I want to look for something a little bit less mainstream,
so I've sold off 1/4 of my
position so that I can diversity my portfolio and delve a bit more into special situations (well,
at least smaller cap
companies with some kind of catalyst for value enhancement)
For instance, rather than buying 200 shares all
at once of
Company XYZ, it is possible to buy 50 shares
at a predetermined price, then 50 more shares $ 5 lower, and
so on and
so forth until a full 200 share
position is established.
Despite being below my cost basis those
companies are already some of my larger holdings
so I didn't want to overweight those
positions at this point.
In practice, index funds are based on market capitalizations and share pricing,
so dilution or repurchase effects are largely irrelevant within that valuation scheme (however, it would be interesting to see a mutual fund invest in all
companies of an index
at a fixed, flat ownership
position over all
companies over time).
As you rise in the firm's ranks,
so too will your network of contacts rise in their respective
companies until you and your contacts arrive
at positions of power.
The
company has one of those «good old boys» type of things; everyone in the
company started out
at the same
position and worked their way up,
so a lot of managers are friends with the AVPs and VPs...
