Hmm, I'm thinking I'm really grateful for this post — I've never had the option of building a house and making this choice, but it will sure keep me from considering buying a house with a two - story family room.

If you remember from this post about the original layout of the Gentry house, we added to the total square footage of the house by converting a large workshop area off the back of the garage into a new mudroom, family room and a fourth bedroom.
