A number of
methods of tactical or strategic
voting exist that can be used in STV elections, but much less so than with First Past the
Post.
In case you're not familiar with the terms, «First Past The
Post» is the
method of
voting used in the US, where we cast a single ballot and whoever gets the most
votes wins (basically).
It is the latest of a series of inroads on the first past the
post voting system; already in elections for the Scottish parliament, the Welsh and Northern Irish assemblies and soon the election of a new London authority, proportional representation has become the chosen
method of
voting.
The Rosatellum used an additional member system, which act as a mixed system, with 36 % of seats allocated using a first past the
post electoral system and 64 % using a proportional
method, with one round of
voting.
Some representatives are elected via the traditional first past the
post method but voters get to cast a second
vote for «top - up» seats, allocated in proportion to the number of
votes.
The referendum concerned whether to replace the present «first - past - the -
post» system with the «alternative
vote» (AV)
method.
A number of electoral systems use single - member districts, including plurality
voting (first past the
post), two - round systems, instant - runoff
voting (IRV), approval
voting, range
voting, Borda count, and Condorcet
methods (such as the Minimax Condorcet, Schulze
method, and Ranked Pairs).
Ministers are thought to have discussed an «alternative
vote» system to replace the current first - past - the -
post method.

As a part of supporting Paul Martin's minority government, the NDP will probably want the Liberals to have a look at a new
voting method, proportional representation, rather than the current first past the
post method.
