A http://www.phdinparenting.com/2010/03/17/new-study-on-impact-of-free-formula-on-

posted about a while ago found that moms who didn't take any formula samples home from the hospital were 3.5 times more likely to be exclusively
breastfeeding at 2 weeks

Of the many things that I adore
about this
post (and there are MANY), one that specifically stands out to me is this: when we identify the problem externally and not internally — when we make the issue
about systematic and institutional and cultural barriers to
breastfeeding and not individual decisions not to
breastfeed — then we help to focus the problem away from moms vs. moms.
Because I'd love to help someone in any small way possible, here's another
post I wrote a year or so ago

breastfeeding was for me, but why I stuck with it: http://danigirl.ca/blog/2007/10/10/the-breast-fest/
Great
post, it's nice to see you getting the word out there
about how
breastfeeding is really becoming accepted nearly everywhere!
What I appreciate
about your
post is that to
breastfeed or not is an insanely personal decision and nobody has a right to judge.
If a mom came on there and
posted about how much she missed
breastfeeding and how sad she was that she wasn't able to
breastfeed anymore, I would bring up relactation as an option.

Whether you personally choose to
breastfeed past two years or not yourself — if you agree with me that it's normal, healthy and ultimately each woman's business, you can «speak up»

I've been thinking
about this topic of full - term
breastfeeding for awhile and when I was looking up keywords for another

breastfeeding» popped up and I couldn't stop thinking
about it.
Thank you for
posting this entry

breastfeeding in public.
I still see
posts from people who are militant
about exclusive
breastfeeding and make statements that use judgmental language
about those who don't.

breastfeed.

Not really related to our topic, but, you know, we hear a lot in the media
about Facebook, and especially moms who are very proud to be
breastfeeding moms and moms
posting photos, and this content being taken down.
Robin Kaplan: Here's a comment from one of our Facebook friends, this is from Shelley, and what she wrote was, «I
posted this on the Leaky Boob as well, but with all the negative stories we've been hearing lately
about nursing in public, I thought I'd share the wonderful
breastfeeding encouragement I had a couple of weekends ago, from my 85 - year - old great uncle.
SUNNY GAULT: Alright, alright well we will go ahead and we will
post the link to our Facebook page mommas if you want to check this out and share it because we need more positivity
about breastfeeding in public.
I wrote a an entire page for a response and will
post the link here when it is published on their website, but for now I will just share with you a portion of what I wrote in reply...» This statement
about breastfeeding is not only incorrect with absolutely no evidenced based research to back it up, but can be harmful t to a mum's breastmilk supply and her baby.

My belief in the merits of
breastfeeding is precisely why I wrote in my
post about Latch On NYC: «encouraging new moms to
breastfeed is a very good thing, and so is banning from the maternity ward the shameless profit - seeking of formula manufacturers.»
I think women are becoming more comfortable in telling others that they are still nursing older babies so hopefully there will be a shift in attitudes but I have recently «lost» a few facebook followers after
posting a status regarding full - term
breastfeeding (I think they were most likely from a giveaway I did ages ago and not on the same page re: bf etc) Apart from that, I love telling Mums on the ward (I'm a bf peer supporter) I'm still feeding as it opens their mind to that possibility and I think I look pretty normal so it mostly doesn't freak them out My son is far too busy to nurse out and
about and prefers juice so we've not nursed in public (apart from support group) since he was 18 mths and that was as I had a blocked duct!

I know this was
posted a while ago but I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to put in my 2 agurot:) When my first child (now 11) there was much less awareness
about breastfeeding in general in this country and unfortunately I myself knew little
about it and got ZERO support from the hospital.
