Belarusian Potash Co. supplied about 42 per cent of the world's
potash exports before it broke up and sent prices to a four - year low as major buyers like China and India waited to see how far prices would fall.

And perhaps worst of all, the
export cartel model, the one that all but made the Canadian
potash business what it is, is in danger of falling apart.
However China has started to sign
potash contacts in recent weeks with a deal with Uralkali and another with Canpotex — the Canadian
export partnership that includes PotashCorp, Agrium and Mosaic — at around US$ 305 per tonne, effectively establishing a price floor.
Historically, people living on the Prairies relied on
exporting grain — and, more recently,
potash and oil — to markets outside Canada's borders.
A key element in this shift is China; the value of Chinese
exports to Canada tripled over this period and Canadian
exports to China, while still small relative to
exports to the US, have grown steadily in value driven by commodity
exports which have been buoyed by high prices and huge demand in China for key Canadian
exports such as minerals (nickel, coking coal,
potash, copper and iron ore), pulp and lumber.
