This is dependant on the size of the room, placement of fixtures, work areas and the size and light beam of
the potlight you are installing.
So in this example, the ambient or general lighting is
the potlights.

I would love to add something like this to our bowling alleyish kitchen / tv area, and am wondering how hard this is to do when you have
potlights — do you put up the pieces then trace?
Potlights have a clean esthetic to them but...........
