But listen to what money could buy in those days: A loaf of bread cost 5 cents; a «capricho» (sweet bun) cost 1 cent; a can of condensed milk 5 cents; a pound of rlce 2 cents;
a pound of beans 3 cents; a pound of flour 3 cents; a «sarta» (string of fish) of seven 1 and a 1/2 pound snappers cost 8 to 10 cents; 12 salted (corned) mullets 15 cents.
If you don't think you can use an entire
pound of beans (usually about fifty), it is worth it to ask a friend or two to split an order with you.
I tend to buy
a pound of beans once a year, which is enough to make a big batch of vanilla extract, use whole in recipes and even give some away to friends.
And since
a pound of beans is a lot cheaper than a pound of meat, vegetarian meals can also be a big boost to your budget.
You see, I make up a whole
pound of beans at once then freeze them.
I ended up using the whole
pound of beans and increased the broth to 6 cups.
