I had previously shown this work in
Poussin Gallery in 2011, though I think Gili amended it slightly before it got to the RA, where it won the Jack Goldhill Award for Sculpture.
Mitchell's palate of mossy greens — veined with sumptuous red and blue accents — evokes the pastoral genre, suggesting a painting
by Poussin painting torn to shreds.

I went to see the new exhibition of his work
alongside Poussin's at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London last week, and they were well matched.
He can take
apart Poussin's The Triumph of Pan, reconfiguring the elements of its composition over and again in semi-abstract variations that seem to unleash the intensely structured violence of the original.
Looking at this phenomenon from the top end of the spectrum, with Rembrandt and
Poussin once owned by Joshua Reynolds, Degas and Cézanne owned by Matisse, and Corot owned by Lucian Freud.
The work begins with a visual analysis of historical Baroque painting (
e.g. Poussin, Vermeer, etc.) as a basis for understanding painting, not as a fixed identity but as a specific spatial construction with a pictorial and spatial vocabulary.
