In light of this pattern, we can appreciate that the shed blood of Christ, the «Lamb of God,» made permanent atonement for mankind, and also made it possible for people to be ``... clothed
with power from on high» (Luke 24:49).
The Catechism teaches that «like Baptism, which it completes, confirmation is given only once, for it too imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual mark, the «character» which is the sign that Jesus Christ has marked a Christian with the seal of his Spirit by clothing him with
power from on high so that he may be his witness».20 Baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist are seen as forming a unity (CCC 1306).
In fact,
this power from on high is a common theme right here through Paul's letter to the Ephesians.
On that day, you were, in the words of today's gospel, «clothed with
power from on high.»
Stay in the city until you are clothed with
power from on high.»
In the midst of the clashes of the principalities and powers of the present age, you have been «clothed with
power from on high» to bear witness to the One who was and is and is to be.
And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you are clothed with
power from on high.»
This little note from Matthew 18 is a gentle remind that the eleven had not yet received by full measure «
power from on high».
And we must urgently pray to be filled with the spirit of God, for only when we are endowed with
power from on high will we be what God has called us to be and do what he has called us to do.
