After years
of resisting efforts to define a dangerous level
of warming in international climate discussions, the United States joined with the rest
of the world's major industrial
powers on Wednesday in a (non-binding) pledge to avoid
warming the
planet beyond a threshold long favored by European governments and many climate campaigners as a no - go zone.
Coal that's mined from federal lands is burned in coal - fired
power plants; coal - fired
power plants emit carbon pollution; and carbon pollution
warms our
planet and contributes to increasingly destructive weather events and other consequences
of climate disruption (2).
Even now there are countless groups, organizations, and individuals that are still clinging to carefully crafted
power structure propaganda and lies
of «global cooling», «global
warming is a hoax», or «we can't tell if the
planet is
warming or cooling».
With record temperatures the past seven months; with 2016 almost certainly going to be the hottest year globally on record (beating out 2015 and 2014); with the Great Barrier Reef sustaining massive (perhaps irreversible) damage due to global
warming induced coral bleaching; and with Donald Trump bloviating about droughts and picking a global
warming denier as his energy advisor, the sooner the deniers like Smith are out
of power, the better our
planet — the better all
of us, every human on Earth — will be.
Power plants are the largest source
of greenhouse gases in the U.S., accounting for about a third
of the annual emissions that make the U.S. the second largest contributor to global
warming on the
planet.
They believe that if you fictionalize the input
power of the Sun to -18 oC, on average, on a flat Earth, and then create a greenhouse effect to explain why it is so much
warmer than this on the ground, that this is a more valid way
of thinking about the
planet Earth than its reality
of actually being spherical with +49 oC
