So it's apples and anvils, and yet there is one movie I could curl up with for a long, long time, in dark sybaritic contentment, and that's Paul Thomas Anderson's «Phantom Thread» — a love story and a power play made with subtle but outrageously generous attention to craft, onscreen and behind the camera, in its performances and in the rich, hermetic world it creates.

The themes were many and varied: the simmering heat of racial politics (Get Out, Detroit); a U.S. President's unconstitutional war against a free press (The Post), the rage that comes when you feel helpless to fight the power (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri); and the essential question of how to live in a world heading for global disaster (Dunkirk, Darkest Hour).

The Darkest Minds follows a group of runaways with tremendous powers who try to find freedom in a dystopian world that imprisons teens like them.

We've seen three other gems in different forms: the Tesseract in «Captain America: The First Avenger» and «The Avengers,» the Aether from «Thor: The Dark World,» and the Power Stone from «Guardians of the Galaxy.»
