of life in which we find ourselves, I believe that the local
church can have a real impact on the largely unreached twentysomething population.
In varying degrees, most
of them want
practical theology to become more critical and philosophical, more public (in the sense
of being more oriented toward the
church's ministry to the world rather than simply preoccupied with the needs
of its own internal
life), and more related to an analysis
of the various situations and contexts
of theology.
Today we have plenty
of cults, sects and false
churches replacing
practical love and righteousness in daily
life (that would require the true faith) through ridiculous rituals (for example, the Muslims keep the 5 Pillars
of Islam; that is enough to be a good Muslim, but they are not required to love all people independent from belief, nationality, etc.) The cults, sects and false
churches make their members practicing a biased love.
As Malloy writes, in reflecting on the uniqueness
of the Catholic
Church «one can affirm both the essential fullness
of the ecclesial reality
of the Catholic
Church and the concrete poverty and woundedness
of her
lived life, together with her
practical need
of the expressive ecclesial riches found outside her visible boundaries.»
Is it not true that Paul's «purely» theological insights are, on closer inspection, responses to the cultural crises and
life situations
of young
churches facing concrete problems, and that his «purely»
practical advice has within it a theological dimension?

The contributions on the one hand
of Biblical, historical and systematic theology,
of history, the sociology
of religion and the theology
of culture; and on the other, the
practical experiments and experiences in ecumenical, national, municipal and parish organization
of church life, will, one may hope, eventually be brought together in some kind
of temporary historical synthesis.
Practical theology, emerging out
of life in a faith community, is a doxological mode
of reflection that, by placing itself within the context
of the
church's service to God, attempts to facilitate the goal
of a faithful
life in the present on behalf
of God's future.
Equally important, the two foci
of each dimension
of practical theology — one in the
church and one in the world — help to encourage a dialectical relationship between the Christian faith community and other perspectives and efforts to shape our common
life.
Such
churches, respecting the difference between
church and state yet recognizing the cultural and
practical interconnection
of civic and religious
life, can serve as schools for civic as well as personal virtue, for public - spirited citizens as well as for devout believers.
It may be an arrangement that factors out different aspects
of the school's common
life to the reign
of each model
of excellent schooling: the research university model may reign for faculty, for example, or for faculty in certain fields (say,
church history, or biblical studies) but not in others (say,
practical theology), while paideia reigns as the model for students, or only for students with a declared vocation to ordained ministry (so that other students aspiring to graduate school are free to attempt to meet standards set by the research university model); or research university values may be celebrated in relation to the school's official «academic» program, including both classroom expectations and the selection and rewarding
of faculty, while the school's extracurricular
life is shaped by commitments coming from the model provided by paideia so that, for example, common worship is made central to their common
life and a high premium is placed on the school being a residential community.
Starting tomorrow, in the interest
of tying it all together, I want to provide some
practical thoughts on how preaching and teaching could look within
church life today.

living God is contemporaneously doing in the world to bring his reign to visibility in, with, and under the affairs
of the earth; the
