National Dog Bite Prevention Week Encourages Citrus County Residents to
Practice Responsible Dog Ownership
The Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) celebrates this month by encouraging potential dog owners to not only adopt a furry friend from a rescue or shelter but also to
practice responsible dog ownership throughout the pet's life.
Members should extend courtesy and goodwill at all times and also
practice responsible dog ownership.

The overpopulation of pets is an unfortunate consequence of large scale breeding
practices (puppy mills, etc.), consumer demand for particular
dog and cat breeds, and less than
responsible pet
ownership (backyard breeding, refusal to spay / neuter, impulse acquisition, etc.).
My study of
dog bite - related fatalities occurring over the past five decades has identified the poor
ownership / management
practices involved in the overwhelming majority of these incidents: owners obtaining
dogs, and maintaining them as resident
dogs outside of regular, positive human interaction, often for negative functions (i.e. guarding / protection, fighting, intimidation / status); owners failing to humanely contain, control and maintain their
dogs (chained
dogs, loose roaming
dogs, cases of abuse / neglect); owners failing to knowledgably supervise interaction between children and
dogs; and owners failing to spay or neuter
dogs not used for competition, show, or in a
responsible breeding program.

dog is licensed and always kept on a leash when outside, that your cat is kept indoors, your pet is wearing a tag and has a microchip, and is spayed / neutered.

dog bite prevention programs, recommendations continue to shift in favor of multifactorial approaches focusing on improved
ownership and husbandry

While an overwhelming majority of interactions with
