Experiments Prather and her team conducted in California's Sierra Nevada produced the first conclusive evidence that dust
aerosols can change the amount of
precipitation produced
by clouds.
A large portion of secondary organic
aerosols - tiny particles in the air we breathe that contribute to cloud formation and
precipitation - arise from a combination of man - made pollution and molecules given off
by plant matter.

The potential risks around sulfate
aerosol solar geoengineering include alteration of regional
precipitation patterns, its effects on human health, and the potential damage to Earth's ozone layer
by increased stratospheric sulfate particles.
I was thinking instead perhaps more easily controlled polar - orbit satellites might be used, which would rotate with some fixed ratio to their orbital period, casting greater shadows at higher latitudes... or some other arrangment... for a targetted offset polar amplification of AGW especially and in particular perhaps avoiding the reduction in
precipitation that can be caused
by SW - radiation - based «GE» (although
aerosols that actually absorb some SW in the troposphere while shielding the surface would have the worst effect in that way, I'd think)... strategic distribution of solar shading has been suggested with
precipitation effects in mind, such as here... sorry, I don't have the link (I'm sure I saved it, just as Steve Fish would suggest — but where?).
Aerosols exert a forcing on the hydrological cycle
by modifying cloud condensation nuclei, ice nuclei,
precipitation efficiency, and the ratio between solar direct and diffuse radiation received.
As to actual data you may want to search on the recent data regarding the surface accumulation in the Canadian and Alaskan Arctic
by NASA and the NOAA US Western coastline
aerosol detection stations regarding
aerosol precipitation fallout being detected there.
How are soil moisture, surface fluxes, and
aerosol properties altered
by deep convective
precipitation events and seasonal accumulation of
precipitation?
This allowed the development and validation of more realistic simulations that replicated the aircraft measurements and thus quantified more reliably the entities that can not be obtained directly
by the aircraft measurements to improve understanding and modeling of
aerosol - cloud -
precipitation interactions.
• Strong depletion of
aerosols driven
by precipitation losses appears to be a fundamental component of a POC.
The US SW
precipitation has been dominated
by oceanic influences (PDO and AMO) with no direct effect due to anthropogenic greenhouse gases and
aerosols (GHGA).
However, the relative cooling effect of sulphate
aerosols is dominated
by the effects of increasing greenhouse gases
by the end of the 21st century in the SRES marker scenarios (Figure 10.26), leading to the increased monsoon
precipitation at the end of the 21st century in these scenarios (see Section 10.3.2.3).
The deployment enabled the study of how
aerosol and cloud life cycles, including cloud -
aerosol -
precipitation interactions, are influenced
by pollutant outflow from a tropical megacity.
Because of the first of these reasons, were we to abruptly halt all emissions now, the sulfate
aerosols would rapidly be removed from the atmosphere
by precipitation whereas the CO2 concentration would remain elevated, and so there would be a significant further warming influence just as a result of past emissions; this warming would lead to the quite significant global warming that Lindzen mentions.
On the other hand, if some of the anthropogenic
aerosols act as ice nuclei, supercooled clouds could be converted into ice clouds
by the glaciation indirect effect (Lohmann, 2002), resulting in more efficient
precipitation formation.
This allowed the development and validation of more realistic simulations that replicated the aircraft measurements and thus quantify more reliably the entities that can not be obtained directly

In addition to the data from the radiometers, the Berkeley Lab scientists will get supplemental data
by taking advantage of a separate, in - depth DOE climate study at the same location, which is using additional instruments and a balloon - borne sounding system to get information on temperature, cloud cover, the density and types of
aerosols or pollution particles, heat fluxes and other climate variables like
precipitation.
Steve Ghan, from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, says, «This work confirms what previous cloud modelling studies had suggested: that although clouds are influenced
by many factors, increasing
aerosols enhances the variability of
precipitation, suppressing it when
precipitation is light and intensifying it when it is strong.
Studying the atmospheric
aerosol particles, which impact cloud formation and particles, above a pristine forests, researchers discovered that when left alone the Amazon acts as its own «bioreactor»: clouds and
precipitation are produced
by the abundance of plant materials.
