A team of researchers led by biophysicists at the University of Washington have come one step closer to
designing tailor - made
drug molecules that are more
precise and carry fewer side effects than most existing therapeutic compounds.
Dr Emma Smith, senior science communications officer at Cancer Research UK, said: «Revealing the molecule's detailed shape could be the first step towards
designing more
precise drugs to block it.
Now the
precise structure of the pyripyropenes is known, chemists should be able to
design similar molecules that may be even more effective at blocking ACAT and form the basis of
drugs to treat atherosclerosis.
«If we can establish a link between abnormal forms of this gene and ADHD, it could provide us with a powerful new tool for
precise diagnosis and early identification of children at risk, and a signpost toward
designing better
drug treatment,» said Ed Cook, associate professor of psychiatry and of pediatrics at the University of Chicago and lead author of the report.
By uncovering the
precise cellular mechanisms of nicotine's effect, this study suggests new and more
precise targets for
drugs designed to block this powerful craving.
«The ability to picture what the lock looks like could help scientists
design more
precise drugs that act on the tau protein and stop damage to the brain.
