In prior work we
used a longitudinal design to test whether the interaction between internalizing and externalizing symptoms in early adolescence (11 — 12 years old)
predicted adolescent alcohol and drug
use (a composite of cigarette, marijuana, and other illicit SU) 2 years later (Scalco et al. 2014).
Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of
Adolescent Health (Add Health) study, Wong and Brower (2012) found sleep problems to longitudinally
predict suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts, even after controlling for depression,
alcohol problems, drug
use, and youth characteristics such as age, sex, and chronic health problems.
