Some evidence suggests that student engagement is a strong
predictor of student learning.6 Recently, at least 10 largescale, quantitative studies, similar in design, have assessed the effects of leadership behavior on student engagement; all have reported significant positive effects.7
Beyond any other school - based factor, teacher effectiveness has been found to be the most important
predictor of student learning.

of a discussion - based curriculum for 4th - 5th graders, and to the expansion
of an existing discussion - based curriculum for 6th - 8th graders, with a particular focus on science content (Fischer), social studies content (Selman), and academic language skills (Snow & Uccelli).

SAT scores and GPAs are important measures
of the academic abilities
of incoming prospective teachers, but they are only moderate
