prefer covered litter boxes, most cats don't.

Some cats do
prefer the privacy that a hidden cat
litter box or
covered box provides and so take to using them straight away.
On the other hand, a
covered litter box may feel more private and may be
preferred by timid cats.
Some people
prefer to use a
covered litter box, however, there are some potential problems with using this type of
box.
Some cats will
prefer to actually push the
litter aside, and defecate on the hard bottom of the cat
box, then
