The Victoria Miro Gallery exhibition introduces us to

In his
preparatory studies and works
on paper, Fischl's brushwork can be absorbing, but in his big pictures it is usually only serviceable and sturdy; and as for his visual constructs, they work just fine when serviceable and sturdy, but he seems to like them enough to draw attention to them with multipanel contraptions and exaggerated perspectival surprises.

Included among the 15 to 20 works
on view were important loans from public and private collections, including rarely seen
preparatory studies in pencil and watercolor.
Whether as
preparatory studies or as works in their own right, these monochromatic works
on paper offer an intimate sense of the artist's creative and conceptual process that mines the collective subconscious of American culture through a mix of the familiar and the absurd.

Even her
preparatory studies, with their decisiveness and forceful density of overlapping lines, structural forms, and occasional colors, confer full autonomy to these smaller works
on paper, rich in dynamic directional play and dramatic painterly gestures.
