While herding
breeds in particular are extremely intelligent and
in - tune with their handlers, this sensitivity can quickly turn into reactivity and protectiveness, both of which may not
present themselves until maturity (~ 2 years old).
If, at some point
in a
breed's history, a
particular sire or line of dogs becomes predominant, inherited problems may start to arise seemingly out of nowhere simply because attempts to concentrate the desirable genes of select individuals can inadvertently bring together whatever undesirable genes are
present.
The two species have similar
breeding cycle, but they
breed at diffent time of the year (January - February
in the northern species, September - November
in the southern), and
present differences
in breeding strategies:
in particular, length of lactation is longer
in northern elephant seals (24 - 28 days) than
in southern (22 - 23), and also post-weaning fast is longer (56 - 74 days versus 37).
When multi-year preconstruction studies confirm migration, wintering or
breeding season concentrations of raptors
in a
particular area, then plans for development
in that area should be abandoned and development forbidden; if such study shows minimal concentration of raptors, or if specific designs can be demonstrated to pose minimal danger to wildlife
present in the area, then projects can be considered.
