The first
of these alternatives is exemplified in the Fourth Gospel, where the meaning
of the return
of Christ is all but exhausted in the coming
of the Spirit upon the church and where the whole content
of redemption is involved in the incarnation, which is a past event —
present and future only in the sense that it is perpetuated in the
life of the
community.
Worship is the act whereby the reality
of God is made
present and the resonance
of that reality is heard in our
communities and in our personal
lives, dominating the instability
of the times.
Practical theology, emerging out
of life in a faith
community, is a doxological mode
of reflection that, by placing itself within the context
of the church's service to God, attempts to facilitate the goal
of a faithful
life in the
present on behalf
of God's future.
But from the past and from the future comes the call to glimpse what our
present life can be, and so Christians must discover how to address the issues
of life, both as individuals and as a gathered faith
community.
This means that the purpose
of interpretation and preaching is to
present a
life - world that is credible, that can be appropriated, out
of which the
community is authorized and permitted to
live a different kind
of life.
But exactly what he said and exactly how he acted is filtered, for all
of time, through those who saw and heard him: «The only knowledge we possess
of the Christ event reaches us via the concrete experience
of the first local
communities of Christians who were sensitive
of a new
life present in them.»
First, I am not offering a prescriptive model but rather looking for resources to deal with the
present predicament in India from the actual
lived realities
of specific
communities.
Though the problem is so rooted in the nature
of both Church and secular society that it is always
present, yet it has a peculiar urgency for the modern church which is confronted with unusual evidences
of misery in the
life of human
communities and
of weakness within itself.
There is every reason to believe that a
life of material austerity,
of pride and pleasure in the quality
of workmanship rather than in the amount consumed, a
life lived in a warm and supportive
community, would be far healthier for our society, ecologically and sociologically, than our
present dominant pattern
of ever - accelerating consumption.
Our ways
of entertaining the experience,
of interpreting the Bible,
of living in the
community change, but the pattern itself is exhaustlessly both beyond change and yet
present for change.
It has not, however, been as prominent in the actual
life and thought
of religious
communities — even in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when the argument from design was frequently
presented by Christian apologists.
But the person
of Christ is central also because the
community has come to know the power
of reconciling love at work in his
life and thereby in the
present also.
The more faith becomes a
present experience, the more we are willing to let the outward forms
of past generations die, that the
living church may show itself for what it is — the
community of faith.
If we pursue these eccesiological motives, the church will not be an organized closed
community marked by rigid boundaries as at
present, and competing with religious
communities but a congregation
of believers meeting for spiritual fellowship around the Word and the Sacraments, meant to equip them for Christian
living, struggles
of justicefor the people and evangelistic mission in religiously pluralistic or secular social economic and political institutions.
First, Jewish
communities resisted and have continued to do so up to the
present time; and among the Christians themselves, many areas
of life, public and private, were never really Christianized and remained more or less heathen.
The Spirit is known in the Christian
community, but those who recognize the Spirit see his activity in the whole
of life,
present everywhere, filling all things.
Our
present concern, however, is not with this obvious and distressing manifestation
of disharmony in social
life but with the disharmony itself — that is, the failure on the part
of men and women to discern that true
community and sound relationships within it can be found only as each
of us has his or her place in a wider grouping
of humans, where there is vivid contrast because each is valued as being precisely this or that person while the
community as a whole has goals or ends (what used to be called «ideals») that are worthy, upbuilding, and enriching.
Or if they are already in it through
present membership, we are preaching with the purpose that they may grow in the knowledge and love
of Christ, the Church's Lord, more fully appropriate his grace in the
community of his people, and more profoundly realize what it means to be incorporated into his ongoing
life in the fellowship
of the Church.
