In our classes, pre-service
teachers research, create resource sites for, and
present on various apps and
programs, being sure to tie them into the curriculum (for instance, this site that discusses several apps to support language arts and this one that explores the use of iPads for inclusive
education).
As an alternative, we decided to collaborate with a community - based summer enrichment
program to
present teacher candidates, defined at this institution as an undergraduate
education major participating in field experiences and methods classes prior to student teaching, with an appropriate field experience.
This article does not
present an exhaustive list of the types of geospatial technology activities used in our
program's
teacher education courses, nor does it demonstrate the extent of what is possible for the use of these technologies in
teacher education.
Learning management systems and other educational applications are increasingly
presented in
teacher education programs, but the potential of geospatial technologies has yet to be widely explored and considered in the
teacher education research.
A student in an undergraduate
teacher preparation class at California State University - Northridge
presents a reading lesson to the class.The school's undergraduate
education classes were rated highly in several categories, but the
program overall received a low score.
For example, Manzanilla's partnerships with the
teacher education programs and two local school reform networks meant that staff had to take on a lot of additional work: supervising student
teachers, attending network meetings, hosting visitors,
presenting at conferences, and completing assessments their network partners needed for their own accountability reports.
She
presents public lectures on her work for LSST and occasionally works with Brookhaven's Office of
Education Programs where she gives astronomy - related talks for middle and high school students, as well as science
