film neither supports nor scoffs at Sharon's views,
and the superb
performances add immeasurably to a
film that
presents the unbelievable (
and unthinkable) at face value, making it seem oddly plausible in the process.
Adele Haenal
and Kevin Azais both give strong
performances,
and the chemistry is certainly
present on screen, while the flick's bizarrely charming score
and array of beautiful shots create definite impact; one of the
film's final scenes, that takes place in an abandoned town, surprised me in its method of creating danger.

present - day scenes, extracting pinpoint
performances from Finney
and Crudup to ensure there's real emotion swirling amid the vagaries.
Starring the bandleader Paul Whiteman, then widely celebrated as the King of Jazz, the
film drew from Broadway variety shows of the time to
present a spectacular array of sketches,
performances by such acts as the Rhythm Boys (featuring a young Bing Crosby),
and orchestral numbers overseen by Whiteman himself (including a larger - than - life rendition of George Gershwin's «Rhapsody in Blue»)-- all lavishly staged by veteran theater director John Murray Anderson

film is expertly managed; every comic line
and funny moment adroitly
presented and every
performance given with intelligence
and love.

Ronan, who's amassing a very impressive resume in diverse
and extolled
films such as Atonement (2007), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014),
and Brooklyn (2015), here
presents what may be her career - best
performance as the titular rebellious heroine.
The emphasis on the paternal has been most explicit in
films such as The Indian Runner, History of Violence (David Cronenberg, 2005), The Road (John Hillcoat, 2009),
and Captain Fantastic,
and are also clearly
present in such diverse
performances as Mortensen's roles in The Prophecy (Gregory Widen, 1995), The Reflecting Skin (Philip Ridley, 1990), The Passion of Darkly Noon (Philip Ridley, 1995), The Lord of the Rings trilogy (Peter Jackson, 2001 - 2003),
and Jauja (Lisandro Alonso, 2014).
The failures of the
film are not in the
performances of the actors, but rather in the script, which
presents a conclusion that left me frustrated, given the way it turns a portion of its focus from a grieving
and determined mother to the redemption of a racist
and abusive police officer.
Originally aired in 1986,
and featuring Michael Gambon in a tour - de-force
performance as psoriasis - deformed writer Philip E. Marlow, The Singing Detective fused three narratives: a
present - day drama about a psychiatrist trying to get the root of Marlow's childhood trauma, flashbacks to the writer's past,
and a Raymond Chandler - eseque 1940s
film noir fantasy.
The NAACP
and other civil rights groups criticized the
performances and the
films for
presenting stereotyped
and negative images of blacks.
The second half of the
film certainly
presents the moral quandary,
and the
performance of Cumberbatch as a tortured genius overpowers any clichés that might creep in.
These
performances are the heart
and soul of this
film and each actor brings something intangible that would seriously hinder the quality of this
film had they not been
present.
All of the elements of a great
film are
present in 42, which isn't an incandescent biopic like Milk or Ray, but it is solid,
and filled with terrific
performances.
On the evening of the screening, I will be
present to introduce the
film and to discuss Rooney's
performance in «Breakfast at Tiffany's» in order to shed light on these issues in classic Hollywood cinema
and to let the audience know that both institutions are opposed to such portrayals.
However, as
presented by Bill Condon (Gods
and Monsters), it is competently made, with a standout
performance by Liam Neeson (Love Actually, Gangs of New York),
and as fine a group of supporting actors as one might hope for with a
film budgeted at only $ 11 million.
The lead, Romola Garai, is excellent — though her
performance isn't enough to recommend the
film, as it's saddled with terrible diary - writing narration (filling the diary seems to be the
present action of the
film, but it's decided on later
and the
film never takes advantage of that reasonable structure).

Internationally recognized as a leading arts venue, the Walker Art Center
presents contemporary visual arts
and design exhibitions; dance, theater,

This series will
present a
performance lecture by Joan Jonas with Jason Moran (May 27) at DB Clarke Theatre,
performances at the Phi Centre by Taisha Paggett (May 25), Tanya Lukin Linklater (June 21)
and Simone Forti (June 22), as well as two evenings of
film and video screenings (May 24
and June 20) at the Phi Centre in addition to an afternoon of conversations (May 26) at Hexagram UQAM / Concordia University.

and performance art, while also
presenting new visionary work within the fields of dance, music, literature,

In the Spring of 2015, his books,
films and performances will be
presented at the University of Georgia where he will be a Visiting Artist.
Last year's Tuner Prize shortlist heralded what looked suspiciously like the return of sculpture — stuff that was physically
present in the gallery after years of empty rooms, off - site projects,

During the run of the show, Superior Viaduct will feature the work of photographer Ruby Ray, screen

This Tate Modern retrospective of octogenarian American
performance art,
film and video pioneer Joan Jonas is the largest showing of her work in the UK to date, including
films and installations from the 1960s to the
present day.
Culled from the artist's archive of hundreds of color slides originally shot using Ektachrome
film (which Kodak discontinued in 2013), Harris initially
presented selections from his archive publicly as digital projections at Yale University, as well as in conjunction with the exhibition Radical Presence: Black
Performance in Contemporary Art at New York University's Grey Art Gallery
and the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2013 - 14.
