This is important because added
pressure from surface water filling crevasses can drive cracks right through the ice sheet.

One of [the whale's] peculiarities it is, to have an entire non-valvular structure of the blood - vessels, so that when pierced even by so small a point as a harpoon, a deadly drain is at once begun upon his whole arterial system; and when this is heightened by the extraordinary
pressure of
water at a great distance below the
surface, his life may be said to pour
from him in incessant streams.
Protoplanet Vesta, visited by NASA's Dawn spacecraft
from 2011 to 2013, was once thought to be completely dry, incapable of retaining
water because of the low temperatures and
pressures at its
surface.
«The DIC lakes are situated within bedrock troughs in mountainous terrain, exist at temperatures well below the
pressure - melting point, do not receive
surface meltwater input, and likely consist of hypersaline
water derived
from dissolution of a surrounding salt - bearing geological formation,» the researchers reported.
(In the global time average, diffusion of latent heat is in the same direction as sensible heat transport, but latent heat will tend to flow
from higher to lower concentrations of
water vapor (or equilibrium vapor
pressure at the liquid / solid
water surface), and regionally / locally, conditions can arise where the latent heat and sensible heat fluxes are oppositely directed.)
In a runaway greenhouse, enough
water vapor evaporates
from the ocean to keep the
surface at saturation, and even if there weren't any contribution to
surface pressure from the rest of the atmosphere, this would prevent boiling.
New observations
from the North Sea, a NW European shelf sea, show that between 2001 and 2005 the CO2 partial
pressure (pCO2) in
surface waters rose by 22 matm, thus faster than atmospheric pCO2, which in the same period rose approximately 11 matm.
5) As a consequence, the partial
pressure of CO2 has been rising in these as sinks acting
surface waters, which has been making CO2 absorption
from the atmosphere to the sea
surface sinks become slower.
Think on atmospheric chemistry, individual rates for the reactions of nitrogen oxides and oxy - radicals can dependent on concentration, atmospheric
pressure, temperature, light flux, liquid
water levels, silicate
surface (
from dust) and «unknown unknowns *».
Thanks Bill for this — nice graphics, though we are still left with the question of what the ultimate driver is — winds respond to
pressure differences, and
pressure differences can result
from warm / cold
surface waters or....
When the intensity of ultraviolet light
from the sun increases, temperature rises in this ozone rich air and weakens the downdraft, lowers the
surface pressure and with it the strength of the trade winds that blow across the ocean to the low
pressure zones that form over the warm
waters that accumulate in the west.
As the temperature increases, the
water vapor
pressure (hence by inference the
water evaporation rate on non-dry
surface) increases supralinearly; that is, a 1K increase
from 288 K is much less than a 1K increase
from 308K.
Thus a parcel of air into which
water vapour is injected will rise without any change in ambient temperature. The reduction of density
from surface upwards is what initially reduces air
pressure as measured
from the
surface.
At the
surface, increased
pressure from injecting
water vapour into a parcel of air via evaporation causes the parcel to rise so that
surface pressure below it falls.
iii) If the air temperature tries to diverge
from the temperature set by the ocean
surfaces the
surface pressure distribution shifts to changes the speed of the
water cycle thereby eliminating any such divergence.
Air is useless at opposing the weight of the ice, so we are only interested in the
water pressure, which requires that we acknowledge the importance of meltwater
from the
surface.
The
water vapor
pressure is below the saturation value of 101325 Pa at 373.15 K (that isn't quite right either, but close enough) so there will be net evaporation of
water from the
surface as it warms
from absorption of radiation and conduction
from the
water vapor.
A balance develops between the Coriolis force and the force arising
from the horizontal
water pressure gradient such that
surface currents flow parallel to the contours of elevation of sea level.
As a consequence, the partial
pressure of CO2 has been rising in these as sinks acting
surface waters, which has been making CO2 absorption
from the atmosphere to the sea
surface sinks become slower.
As regards a warming of the ocean skin, evaporation is a continuous process caused by temperaure, density and
pressure (not just temperature) differentials between
water and air so that the rate of evaporation accelerates when a
water surface is warmed such as
from the warming effect of extra greenhouse gases (especially if the air is dry).
Only if the oceans freeze across their entire
surfaces thereby causing the hydrological cycle to cease or if the sun puts in energy faster than it can be pumped upward by the hydrological cycle will the basic temperature equilibrium derived
from the properties of
water and the density and
pressure of the atmosphere fail to be maintained.
If the majority of the heat in the
water at depth is
from pressure, friction and gravity effects how can the tiny amount of heat
from the sun on the
surface layers be of any consequence.
Gas wells are punched deep into the earth; layers of rock are then «cracked» by injecting sand - and chemical - filled
water under great
pressure - the so - called «fracing» process - allowing natural gas to escape to the
surface via well head, and so it is feared, allowing contaminants
from fracing fluids to move into nearby
water wells.
«Given that the UK are under immense
pressure to build more homes year on year, any improved initiatives which might lead to measures during the construction phase to improve or reduce the impact on the environment and help mitigate flood damage, particularly
from surface water run - off has to be a good idea.
