The team produced the tiny nanoparticles using a
synthesis technique known as the solvothermal
method, in which precursors are heated under
pressure in a special vessel, called an autoclave.
High -
pressure synthesis (over 10 GPa) is not a commonly used
method in the field of materials science, write the researchers in their study published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
«We had to modify the
method to conform to PNNL safety requirements, which meant not working in gas tubes under high
pressure,» said Derewinski, a materials
synthesis expert.
Different chemicals used for the field include inhibitors for scaling, fouling, corrosion, asphaltene control, formation damage, differential
pressures in multiphase environments which will be met by new
synthesis methods including metathesis reactions, bio based feedstocks, new polymer surfactants, living polymers, and nanoparticle.
