The game is a reboot for the franchise and will take the series to the world of Norse mythology, where as
all previous God Of War games were based on Greek mythology.
The studio overhauled
the previous God of War trilogy's hack - and - slash style gameplay with a Dark Souls - inspired setup where tactics and strategy are rewarded over button mashing.
It's the next chapter — or era — in Kratos» life, and because reboot or reimagining imply going back to start over and re-explore origins, they are hesitant to call it either of those, despite how different this game is from

However, with
God of War 3 raising the bar so high and closing the book on Kratos» journey
of revenge, Ascension sorely lacks the marvel
of the
previous games.
The combat here is more nuanced, a bit less chaotic, and pops up a little less frequently than in

God of War: Ascension, a prequel, released to far less fanfare than the
previous games, and it was unclear where Sony Santa Monica could go after that.
More broadly,
God of War is a hard pivot to something more mature, something where Sony Santa Monica explores the character
of Kratos on a deeper level than has been touched on in
previous games.
It's a similar story to
previous Ubisoft launches The Division (2016) and Ghost Recon: Wildlands (2017) which both had four weeks at No. 1, although it's a fairly safe bet that Far Cry 5 will face serious, angry, competition when
God of War launches at the end
of the week.
Sure, this new
God of War has plenty
of big moments, but they feel a little less impactful than they were in

It is still a great game to me because it's
God of War but the story doesn't grab me like in
previous games.
While the
previous GoW games had solid vocal performances, this
God of War is light years beyond its predecessors when it comes to emotional weight and three - dimensional character development.
The change in setting has given the
God of War team a chance to spread their wings beyond the dark, dimly lit stone arenas and stormy skies
