The dual exhibition marks a pivotal moment for the
artist, whose
previous films include a documentary on the Handsworth race riots and another on influential black cultural theorist Stuart Hall.
Pollock, Edvard Munch, Andy Warhol, or Frida are not just the names of
artists, but also the titles of
films that depict lives and struggles of some of the best known
artists of the
previous century.
Building on
previous exhibitions, the
artist continues to critique storytelling in contemporary culture, and its reliance on
film and photography.
With this
film,
artist and filmmaker Shirin Neshat returns to the themes of her
previous feature
film «Women Without Men» (2009) and continues to develop her unmistakable visual style.
This major new
film and sculptural commission by multidisciplinary Franco - German
artist Ulla von Brandenburg (b. 1974, Karlsruhe, Germany), takes
previous Whitechapel Gallery exhibition Sweets (1973) as its inspiration.
In her
previous works, the
artist has referenced
films such as The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Red Shoes (1948), as well as selected works by Alfred Hitchcock, Jean - Luc Godard and David Lynch.
Having featured the
artist in our
previous print issue, and seeing his surreal, unsettling, and sarcastic
film at the Whitney Biennial that year office was more than eager to see his newest exhibit.
The exhibition includes work by
previous winners from 2008 — 2017: Luke Fowler, Lindsay Seers, Emily Wardill, Anja Kirschner & David Panos, James Richards, John Smith, Ursula Mayer, Seamus Harahan, Heather Phillipson and Oreet Ashery, alongside
