Garrel, with only one
previous film in Competition, has always had an affinity for the alternative festival that the Fortnight can be at its best, as in this edition.

But I notice a trend this year: the
films in the
Competition are more accessible than
previous years.
Out of the 22
films selected, the favourites for cinema's most prestigious prize include
previous winner Michael Haneke, for his
film Amour, Ukraine's Sergei Loznitsa for
In The Fog, France's Jacques Audiard for Rust and Bone, starring Marion Cotillard, and the young American director Jeff Nichols for his
competition debut with Mud.
Three other
films in competition represented «promotions» for their directors, who had all had their
previous outings featured
in other sections of the festival, but the results were uneven at best.

There are both a Korean and an International
Competition section, although both lack
in the prestige names of larger festivals, as well as a Korean and World Cinemascape, encompassing
previous debuted and often acclaimed
films.
Both of his
previous films — the critically acclaimed crime drama Drive (2011) and the quite polarizing revenge thriller Only God Forgives (2013)-- played
in the official
competition and Winding...
The
competition offers a total prize money of 500,000 rand ($ 57,000)
in three categories for books published
in Afrikaans the
previous year: literary fiction, non-fiction and book with most
film potential, with the latter being won by Zirk's novel.
