While
the previous films in the series have been just that — parts of a sequence designed to get us here, each with their own beginning and end — the first and second parts of Deathly Hallows are two halves of the same film, and to approach them as separate entities means missing just what director David Yates, writer Steve Kloves, and a host of storytellers and performers have done: They've made a five - hour fantasy epic that balances effects - driven battles with some very real character moments, and one that isn't afraid to have its heroes pay a high price for their convictions.
While none of the «Insidious» films have cost very much, this is the first one that can be said to look cheap, with the flatly lit, washed - out digital cinematography of Brian Pearson a poor substitute for the silky elegance John R. Leonetti brought to
the previous films in the series.
Grander in scope than
any previous film in the series, the story spends most of its first 45 minutes globetrotting to catch us with all the key characters, and introducing us to the new ones, including the young Jean, Scott and Kurt, played winningly by Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Kodi Smit - McPhee, respectively.
The fourth film into a franchise really ought to be reviewed by someone who knows and likes
the previous films in the series.
When Del Toro was making Blade II and the Hellboy films, he was mostly beholden to

in the eyes of viewers, while also representing the first major female - fronted superhero flick

Okay, so Ramsay is still a pretty reckless choice for a studio
in need of a billion - dollar hit — and not only because the cumulative gross of her
previous films is less than Daniel Craig's personal speedo budget from «Casino Royale» — but her elliptical style could play to the
series» recent strengths.
Because I barely remember anything from any other movie
in this
series (I had to go back and reread my reviews, not just to refresh my memory, but to affirm that I'd even seen the
previous films), everything that wraps up loose threads, the two (count»em) times characters are forced to give Biblical genealogies to the probable delight of ardent fans, the deadening nonsense involving love triangles, all that jazz, is exactly like watching paint dry.
A Quidditch match (a sport played on broomsticks
in the air above a verdant pitch) is executed with CGI flair and a fair degree of menace (so far superior to the
previous film's match that it hardly bears comparison); a chase through a dark wood is handled with verve and heat; and a quieter
series of events
in an abandoned girl's bathroom smartly mixes the creepy with the pathetic.
Statham's
previous film outside these hit
series was Homefront (co-starring James Franco), which debuted with a weak # 440,000 from 295 cinemas
in December 2013.
Taylor's original choice of composer was Carter Burwell who didn't seem the most natural of choices, so it wasn't entirely a surprise when he departed the project (seemingly not the director's choice, but the studio's); a very capable replacement was hired
in the form of Brian Tyler, who also scored the
previous film in the franchise, Iron Man 3, and just maybe he will become the «house composer» for this
series, which has so far failed to establish any kind of distinctive musical identity.
Inevitably, there's no denying a comparison of technique with Altman and Mike Leigh (Canijo spent two years developing the characters with the actors via a
series of workshops as Leigh does), but the
film stands quite firmly as an often uncomfortable, unpleasant, and always fascinating family saga that would,
in a fair world, finally open up the English speaking market to Canijo's
previous directorial efforts, which date back to the early 80s.
I vaguely recall the
previous two
films in the
series from 2008 and 2011, but this latest installment was a real delight.
The currently untitled Jason Bourne sequel, the fifth
